Continued Detention of Rev. Ugolor: A Violation of his Rights

[BEING A PRESS STATEMENT ISSUED BY THE END IMPUNITY NOW CAMPAIGN – 31-07-12]

INTRODUCTION:

The End Impunity Now Campaign is a nationwide campaign platform aimed at challenging all forms of Impunity in governance and mobilising popular pressure and mass action to prevent, curtail, mitigate, punish, and end all acts of those in authority that smack of impunity.

The campaign is endorsed by a growing number of civil society and citizen’s organisations across the country.

ON THE CONTINUED DETENTION OF REV UGOLOR:

The EIN campaign is shocked at the arrest of the Environmental Justice Activist, and Executive Director of African Network on Economic and Environmental Justice [ANEEJ] ostensibly in connection with the murder of fellow activist and late principal private secretary to the Edo State Governor, Comrade Olaitan Oyerinde.

We frown at and condemn the continued detention of Ugolor beyond the legal limit of 48 hours. We demand that our colleague, David Ugolor be immediately released or charged to a proper court if there is any evidence or case against him.

At the moment everything is shrouded in secrecy and we are inclined to believe that he is being framed up by powerful persons who may just be using the law enforcement agencies to pervade the course of justice.

The murder of our comrade and colleague, who is also a very close friend of Rev David Ugolor, was a high profile occurrence; if there is progress in the investigation to unravel those behind his murder, this should also be done in full glare of the public. We demand that the authorities publicly address the world on the current status of their investigation and on the evidence if any that they have implicating Rev Ugolor.

We demand the immediate release of Rev Ugolor if the police are unable to prepare a case against him and charge him to court. We insist that as citizen and patriot his fundamental human rights should be protected.
