#EndSARS Campaign: ANEEJ Condemns Violence by hijackers of peaceful protests

BENIN CITY, NIGERIA. October 20, 2020…The Africa Network for Environment and Economic Justice (ANEEJ) has condemned in strong terms the violence and destructions visited on Edo State by hoodlums who hijacked the peaceful protests of EndSARS campaigners. It also condemned the release of prisoners in all the major prisons in the State.

Executive Director of ANEEJ, Rev David Ugolor in a terse statement issued in Benin City on Monday said the action by perpetrators of the violence was unacceptable by Civil Society Organisations.

“We say No to Violence. ANEEJ will continue to support the call for a comprehensive Police reform and the broad demands of the EndSARS campaign but we strongly condemn the violence carried out by some unscrupulous groups which has resulted in the burning down of police stations in Benin City.

“We also condemn the breaking into the Prisons to set Prisoners free. These actions are unacceptable as they do not represent the overall objectives of the struggle to reform the Nigerian Police and entrench good governance in the country.” Ugolor said.

ANEEJ called on security agencies to carry out proper investigations to ensure that only those involved in brigandage are brought to book.

“We urge millions of Nigerian youths involved in the campaign to end police impunity and brutality to remain fateful to the campaign which enjoys the support of Nigerians both at home and in Diaspora and avoid actions capable of undermining the goal of our campaign.” Ugolor cautioned.
