G8&G20 NIGERIA WORKING GROUP

G8/G20 Press Release

ABUJA, Nigeria. Monday 1 March 2010. The ANEEJ led G8/G20 Nigeria Civil Society Working Group met with Denis Kingsley, the Canadian High Commissioner to Nigeria, on Thursday 25th February to discuss how Nigerian civil society can input into the Canadian-hosted G8/G20 Summits scheduled to take place in Canada later this year.

David Ugolor, ANEEJ Executive Director and convener of the Nigerian G8/G20 Civil Society Working Group, handed the High Commissioner a letter as part of international civil society efforts to lobby G8/G20 governments. Mr Kingsley agreed with the group on the importance of Nigerian civil society views reaching the ears of the G8/G20 Summits and promised to forward any recommendations to Ottawa, the Canadian capital.

It was further agreed that a Roundtable meeting, jointly convened by the G8/G20 Nigeria Civil Society Working Group and the Canadian High Commission, will be held in Abuja on Tuesday, 23 March. Representatives from civil society and the private sector will meet with representatives from G8/G20 countries and the Nigerian government to discuss key issues and agree on a communiqué that will be released after the meeting.

David Ugolor was encouraged by the commitment of the High Commissioner in ensuring that the Nigerian voice is heard at the G8/G20. “It is now important to ensure that not only the G8/G20 governments and Nigerian civil society attend the Roundtable meeting but also representatives from the Nigerian government. We will be extending invitations to all relevant stakeholders.”
