CORRUPTION IN OIL AND GAS SECTOR: NIGERIAN GOVERNMENT BLAMED FOR ENCOURAGING IMPUNITY

[dropcap]A[/dropcap] public affairs analyst and executive director of the Africa Network for Environment and Economic Justice (ANEEJ), David Ugolor has blamed the lack of political will by the Nigerian government to carry out decisive actions on probe reports on the oil and gas sector as the major reason why corruption still thrives in the sector.

These views were expressed on AIT’s business programme global business where the guest, argued that except corrupt person’s found wanting are prosecuted the impunity in the sector will persist.

According to David Ugolor: “No Petroleum minister will do anything without the authority of the president, it is always in that line and that is why you see number of reports that have been produced in this country either from the National Assembly or the Forensic Audit of NNPC. The president has refused to act and what this implies is that he believes in the people he has appointed”.

Motunrayo Alaka, Coordinator Wole Soyinka Center for investigative journalism who was also a guest emphasized the need for government to act on the missing funds. She further highlighted that the missing $20 billion can go a long way in catering for the Nigerian people who are without clean water, infrastructure, education, electricity and other challenging problems in the nation.

Alaka and Ugolor also called on Nigerians to demand for their rights from elected office holders as this would help in checking impunity in other sectors of the economy.
