PWYP Nigeria calls for immediate release of Rev. Ugolor

Publish What You Pay Nigeria, calls for the immediate and unconditional release by the Nigerian police of Rev. David Ugolor over allegations of the murder of Comrade Olaitan Oyerinde.

We have watched with keen interest the developments since the detention of our colleague, Rev. David Ugolor, the immediate past National coordinator of Publish What You Pay Nigeria on Friday, July 27, 2012 by the Nigerian Police.

He was arrested on the excuse that he was named by one of the suspects of having financed the murder of the late comrade Olaitan Oyerinde, the former private secretary of the Edo State Government.

In addition, a latest development, the State Security Service (SSS), the equivalent of the KGB, CIA etc paraded six persons on National TV who confessed to have killed the former private secretary to the governor following an armed robbery attack at his residence.

The SSS spokesperson informed Nigerians that the young men went to the house of late Oyerinde to rob him but killed him in the process. The robbers confessed that it was not their intention to kill him but that the deceased rushed into his bedroom and went under his bed and they were afraid he was reaching out for a gun hence they fired him three times. Journalists asked the suspects if they know Rev David Ugolor, they said no. The question is: why is he still being detained in police cell?

It is obvious that David Ugolor is being framed up for his activism in revenue transparency and bringing reforms to bear on the Nigerian Oil and Gas industry as the Inspector General of Police ordered his arrest and was immediately being framed up of murder.

We call on everyone to add their voices to  put pressure on President Goodluck Jonathan to tell his Inspector General of Police to order the release of Rev. David Ugolor.

Faith Nwadishi

National Coordinator, PWYP, Nigeria
