ANEEJ Backs Edo Governor on Human Capital Development, Urges Civic Engagement
BENIN CITY, NIGERIA. November 2, 2020… The decision of the Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki to focus on Human Capital Development in his second term in Office which begins on 12 November, 2020 has received the backing of a leading Civil Society Organisation in Nigeria, the Africa Network for Environment and Economic Justice (ANEEJ), which believes that the decision will help curb social ills and create numerous opportunities for the overall development of the state.
Executive Director of ANEEJ, the Rev David Ugolor in a statement issued in Benin City today while applauding the commitment of the Governor to establish strong institutions that would enable transparency, accountability and zero tolerance to corruption, charged Governor Obaseki and his team to ensure that Civic engagement forms part of the implementation plan of government.
“We welcome the commitment of Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State to focus his second term in Office on Human Capital Development. We believe that this is needed to put the state on the path of development and economic prosperity. When properly implemented it will help to stop the irregular migration of citizens of the state which has been a major social problem.
“We encourage the governor to make Civic Engagement part of the implementation plan as we strongly believe that such would help to strengthen the State Action Plan (SAP) of the Open Government Partnership,” Ugolor said.
It would be recalled that ANEEJ recently launched a research report entitled “Corruption Migration Nexus” which recommended increased Budgetary Allocation to Human Capital Development in the State as part of “Tackling human trafficking through advocacy to increase investment on human capital development and civic engagement in Edo State” project being supported by the Switzerland Embassy in Nigeria.
Ugolor called on Civil Society Organisations in Edo State to close ranks and work with Governor Godwin Obaseki’s administration to build on the successes recorded in the area of Human Capital Development in the state.
