ANEEJ CONDEMNS REPORTED ATTACK ON SOWORE, DEMANDS PROMPT INVESTIGATION

The Africa Network for Environment and Economic Justice (ANEEJ) strongly condemns the reported attack on Omoyele Sowore and members of his team in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State.

Political violence sends a dangerous signal, undermines democratic participation and threatens the rule of law. No individual should face violence or intimidation for expressing political views, organising peacefully or participating in public affairs.

Reports that armed men disarmed a police officer attached to Mr. Sowore and forcibly took the officer away are particularly disturbing. These allegations require immediate investigation and a clear public explanation from the relevant authorities.

ANEEJ calls on the Nigeria Police Force and other relevant security agencies to establish the facts, identify the perpetrators and ensure that anyone responsible is arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law. The investigation should be prompt, impartial and transparent, regardless of the identities or affiliations of those involved.

We also urge the authorities to establish the whereabouts and ensure the safety of everyone reportedly taken away, protect those affected and prevent further violence.

As Nigeria approaches another election cycle, security agencies should demonstrate professionalism and impartiality in protecting all political actors and citizens. Impunity for political violence encourages further attacks and weakens public confidence in democratic institutions.

ANEEJ stands firmly against political violence and calls on political leaders and their supporters to uphold peaceful engagement, human rights and respect for the law.
