ANEEJ Delegation Heads to Ottawa to Participate in UNEP INC-4
BENIN CITY, NIGERIA. April 23, 2024… The Africa Network for Environment and Economic Justice (ANEEJ) is pleased to announce its delegation’s participation in the fourth session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC-4) to develop an international legally binding instrument on plastic pollution, including in the marine environment. Scheduled from April 23 to April 29, 2024, at the Shaw Center in Ottawa, Canada, this event aligns with the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA) resolution 5/14 titled “End plastic pollution: Towards an international legally binding instrument.”
ANEEJ Acting Executive Director, Leo Atakpu, highlighted the significance of ANEEJ’s involvement in this crucial global initiative. “Plastic pollution, particularly in marine environments, presents a transboundary challenge that requires a comprehensive life-cycle approach. ANEEJ is committed to addressing these issues in Nigeria and supporting global efforts towards environmental justice,” remarked Atakpu.
Led by Programme Manager Innocent Edemhanria, a four-member delegation from ANEEJ will actively participate in the programme organized by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). The aim is to contribute to discussions, share insights, and collaborate on strategies to combat plastic pollution comprehensively.
Atakpu emphasized the urgent need for action, stating, “Plastic waste poses significant threats to marine life, ecosystems, and human health. ANEEJ fully supports UNEP’s efforts to develop a binding international instrument to address this crisis.”
Following the conference, ANEEJ plans to leverage insights gained to support the adoption and implementation of effective frameworks in Nigeria. Additionally, ANEEJ will launch an “end plastic waste” campaign to expand its environmental justice initiatives within the country.
The event promises an engaging agenda, including a high-energy opening session featuring remarks from Canada’s Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau. ANEEJ’s delegation will actively participate in thematic side events focusing on various aspects of plastic pollution mitigation and sustainable transitions.
