NYANYA BOMB BLAST: ANEEJ URGES FEDERAL GOVERNMENT ON PROACTIVE MEASURES AGAINST INSURGENCY
Benin City….. The Africa Network for Environment and Economic Justice (ANEEJ), has condemned the recent explosion at Nyanya Park, Abuja, and urged the Federal government to take urgent steps to end the frequent assault on innocent Nigerians. This call is particularly necessary considering the number of lives that have been lost following frequent attacks and destruction of lives and property by the Boko Haram sect. A statement made available to news men by Innocent Edemhanria, ANEEJ Policy Officer, the organization urged President Goodluck Jonathan to look for proactive ways to end the Boko Haram insurgency in the country.
“As at the last count, over 2000 Nigerians have been killed including secondary school pupils, men, women and harmless children and it is most unfortunate that Nigerians (particularly, the people living in the North East region) have witnessed increased attacks with mass killings by the insurgents in the last few months. The attacks have crippled economic activities in the affected area and the social lives of the people have also been greatly affected as people now live in fear.’’ Edemhanria asserted.
We recall that a similar bomb blast in a Motor Park in Kano two years ago left hundreds of persons dead. A similar blast in Madala, Abuja killed several innocent citizens. In spite of several other experiences, we are surprised that government has not taken acceptable proactive measures to protect lives and property of Nigerians in tickly populated motor parks across the Northern States and Abuja, yet we have uniformed men shooting defenseless voters at party congresses as reported by the media.
“It has become a daily rush to scene of blast after the act has been perpetrated instead of security preventing its occurrence in densely populated places in Northern cities. Besides, how many suspects have been prosecuted and jailed as a result of terrorism? People need to be deterred.” Edemhanria stated.
“It is important for the Nigerian government to concentrate on her primary responsibility which involves catering for the welfare of her citizens and the protection of lives and property of every Nigerian. The Federal government should immediately review its anti- terrorism operation in the North East and the security agents should intensify and change their tactics as well to see that the Boko Haram sect is effectively curtailed.” Edemhanria added
“The implication of the inability of the Federal government to tackle this ugly trend in some parts of the country would mean that people will be forced to relocate to safer places and investment in affected areas would be hampered,” Edemhanria concluded.
