4 Communities to benefit from ANEEJ’s Livelihood support projects

….Wants Government to do more in tackling poverty

BENIN CITY, Nigeria. March 21, 2024… In a bid to tackle growing poverty in Nigeria, a Non-Governmental Organisation, the Africa Network for Environment and Economic Justice, ANEEJ has said that four communities in Edo and Delta would benefit from its Livelihood support project from 2024/2025.

Acting Executive Director of ANEEJ, Mr. Leo Atakpu who made the disclosure in Benin City while fielding questions from newsmen said each of the communities would be supported to establish Livelihood micro-projects under the ‘‘Tackling poverty through resilience building/advocacy for Social Protection, Climate Justice and Anti-Corruption’ project which is being support by Bread for the World, Germany.

He further stated that the project is designed to contribute to reducing poverty in Nigeria by dealing with some of the identified drivers and making efforts to supporting government poverty reduction initiatives.

“The project will also support Climate justice and anti-corruption activities in ways and manners that they contribute to poverty reduction in Nigeria

“Given the impact of petrol subsidy removal and the concomitant high inflation rate, many Nigerians have been pushed into extreme poverty line and we are concerned about them. We want the Federal and sub-national governments to do more to cushion the impact of the current economic crisis on the citizens,” Atakpu said.

The ANEEJ boss called on the federal government to immediately commence the cash transfer programme it promised and ensure that only the poor and less privileged accessed the support.

In the same vein, ANEEJ wants the Governments of Anambra, Edo, Delta, Bayelsa where the project is being implemented to establish Social Protection Programmes and establish institutions through the instrumentality of law to manage the programmes targeting poor and vulnerable citizens of their states.
