Climate Action: ANEEJ welcomes Ajuri Ngelale’s appointment, urges MNOCs compliance

WARRI, NIGERIA. May 21, 2024… The Africa Network for Environment and Economic Justice (ANEEJ), a leading organization dedicated to eradicating poverty and promoting environmental justice in Africa, and Convener of the Peoples Annual General Meeting (AGM), a pan-Nigeria  Civil Society coalition of over 40 Civil Society Organisations working on issues of Climate Change has welcomed the appointment of Chief Ajuri Ngelale as the Special Presidential Envoy on Climate Action in Nigeria, urging him to accelerate compliance by Multi-national Oil Companies (MNOCs).

Executive Director of ANEEJ, the Rev. David Ugolor, in a statement issued yesterday on the sides of the 3rd Peoples AGM in Warri, Delta State, expressed optimism about Chief Ngelale’s appointment and the establishment of the Presidential Committee. He emphasized the importance of this initiative by the President Ahmed Bola Tinubu’s administration in ensuring Nigeria’s adherence to the Paris Climate Agreement and promoting sustainable development.

“This strategic move by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to establish the Presidential Committee on Climate Action and Green Economic Solutions and the appointment of Chief Ajuri Ngelale’s appointment is a pivotal development in Nigeria’s journey towards a sustainable and green economy initiatives in Nigeria,” Ugolor said.

“We urge Chief Ngelale to leverage his new position to ensure that all oil companies operating in Nigeria comply with the Paris Climate Agreement. This compliance is vital for mitigating the adverse effects of climate change and protecting vulnerable communities from environmental degradation. We can pave the way for a sustainable future and unlock new investments in the renewable energy sector,” Ugolor emphasised.

He further highlighted the necessity for a holistic approach to climate action, involving collaboration with various stakeholders, including government, civil society organizations, and international partners.

The Presidential Committee’s mandate is to identify and implement innovative climate action initiatives, monitor progress, and foster inter-institutional collaboration is essential for achieving our national and global climate objectives.
