Supreme Court Affirms Monday Okpebholo’s Election as Governor of Edo State

Benin City, July 10, 2025… The Supreme Court of Nigeria today upheld the election of Senator Monday Okpebholo (APC) as the duly elected governor of Edo State, affirming previous rulings by the Election Petition Tribunal (April 2, 2025) and the Court of Appeal (May 29, 2025), each of which dismissed challenges by the PDP candidate Asue Ighodalo for lack of credible evidence.

Congratulations to Governor Okpebholo

We congratulate Governor Okpebholo on this definitive legal victory. We urge him to view this mandate not just as a personal triumph, but as a historic opportunity to foster an inclusive governance system in Edo State, one that ensures all citizens participate meaningfully in the democratic process.

Commendation for the PDP Candidate

We commend Asue Ighodalo for his principled approach in pursuing legal redress through non-violent, institutional means, demonstrating a respect for due process that is essential to deepening democratic values in Edo State.

Strengthen the Role of Opposition

With the Supreme Court’s decision now final, we encourage Asue Ighodalo and his supporters to channel their energies toward constructive opposition. An active, engaged opposition is vital to democratic health, providing oversight, raising critical issues, and holding the executive accountable.

A Call to Unity and Democratic Maturity

Today’s judgment closes the legal chapter, but marks a new beginning for Edo State. We call on all political stakeholders including the governor, opposition, civil society, and the electorate to seize this moment of clarity and unity. Let us work together towards responsive, transparent, and inclusive governance that serves every community in Edo.

Rev David Ugolor, Executive Director
